The Family Mediation Process

This is a broad overview of the general flow of family mediation.

  1. Intake

When you contact Freedom Mediation, I will coordinate and screen all people invovlved to assess whether mediation is right for your situation.

  2. A hand holding out a compass in front of a lake and mountains - signifying the way family mediation can help set a course for resolution and future success.

    Goal Setting

After all people agree to mediation, we'll lay out the ground rules for our conversations as well as discussing the desired outcomes and objectives.

  3. A welcoming nook with a bistro table - a safe place to have serious conversations about family conflict.

    Sessions

At our sessions, each person will have an opportunity to share their perspectives and thoughts. I will work diligently to create a safe environment for conversation and understanding.

  4. Agreement

When we come to consensus, I will work with each person involved to formalize a written agreement that is clear, mutual, and meets everyone's needs.

Before mediation sessions begin, the mediator will meet with you and the other person separately in order to:

What's Mediation All About?

Separation Agreements

Separating from your partner or spouse can be both emotionally and logistically challenging. It may also lead to a level of disagreement and conflict you may not have experienced before.

Rather than seek resolution through the courts, I help you resolve the key issue at the heart of conflict – a lack of meaningful communication. I recommend a process based on your individual needs. At the end of the process a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be written which can later become the basis for your separation agreement.

As a professional, my objective is to help people pinpoint and understand what is preventing an agreement. This is why, as a mediator, I take the time that I do to recommend a process that will best suit your family’s needs. Through a thoughtfully developed process, I can ensure that you have all information and advice needed to make informed decisions and create durable agreements and relationships, which allow you to communicate long into your future.

How Much Does Family Mediation Cost?

The cost of family mediation in Ontario varies from place to place, but mediation is almost certainly going to save you money over going through the court system.

The hourly rate is $300 plus tax.

For the first appointment, each party will pay up front for an individual meeting. After that, sessions are paid for on a pay as you go schedule (24 hours after each session), and are paid via e-transfer.

Both people will continue to split the session amount each time, or (depending on the situation to mediate), one party will pay for the session each time.

At approximately half the price of lawyer’s fees, mediation is a money-smart alternative to litigation. More than that, mediation gives you a powerful advantage: you and your partner pay less while also retaining the power to choose – to decide for your family what is best, rather than being at the mercy of a judge or the system.

The BIGGEST advantage of mediation is that unless both parties agree, nothing is set in stone, and no further steps are taken. You will both learn together how to relearn working together.

By investing financially in solving arguments, creating solutions to problems, and employing the strategies I share, we can invest in your family’s future by breaking generational patterns for the next generation to come. What you deal with now, your family will not have to fight about later.

I want to encourage you, that with hard work and perseverance, this is one of the wisest financial decisions with your family in mind you can make.
